7MM08 At 3013 Yards - Mark And Sam After Work - MDT Mentions

My favorite shooting couple, Mark and Sam from the YouTube Channel, ‘Mark and Sam AfterWork,’ are back at it again, shooting bullets at absurdly long distances on their range in Australia. As usual, my interest was piqued when I saw the title ‘7mm08 at 3013 yards (Full run down included)’ pop up in my YouTube feed. This almost thirty-minute video starts with Mark shooting at and hitting a steel plate at over 3,000 yards while Sam spots for him.

Mark then cuts to an extensive overview of the rifle used in this video, explaining the parts, the caliber he used, and his reasoning behind this 7mm-08 Remington chambered rifle build, followed by more shooting footage. This video was one of the first I’ve seen documenting the use of a rifle chambered in 7mm-08 Remington for Extreme Long Range Shooting, and it was quite an introduction to the 7mm-08 caliber.

HISTORY OF THE 7MM-08

The 7mm-08 Remington round is essentially a .308 Winchester case necked down to accept 7mm bullets. This round is the second most popular .308-based rifle round after .243 Winchester, and its commercial success can be attributed to Remington’s polarization and naming of the round in 1980. Most hunters who use this round to take down medium or small-sized game animals use a 120-160 grain projectile, while serious long-distance shooters utilize bullets in excess of 175 grains for their higher ballistic coefficients. In this video, we see the capabilities of heavier 7mm-08 Remington loads at great distances. The ammunition Mark and Sam are using in this video is a custom load consisting of Lapua brass, 2209 powder, Federal LR Primers, and 190-grain Berger bullets. Mark and Sam noted that the approximate average muzzle velocity for these reloads was 2650 feet per second.

7mm-08 is essentially a necked-down 308 Winchester.

The rifle Mark and Sam used in this video is a custom Remington Short action setup with a quarter-pound Calvin Elite trigger, a 27-inch Lilja 1:8 twist rate barrel capped with a 4AW 3 port muzzle brake, and a Mirage URL adjustable inclination 50 MOA rail. On the Mirage URL rail is an Element Optics Theos 6-36x 56 Mil scope mounted in an Era-Tac scope base with a Vortex bubble level. Mark noted that he was using the Optic at about the 25 power level setting with a NightForce Wedge Prism for an extra 29 Mils of elevation. Even with the Wedge prism, Mark has adjusted the optics rail as well to achieve approximately 62 Mil total elevation for these 3,000-yard shots. The custom receiver and barrel are mated to a shortened MDT ACC Premier Chassis, which worked well with the 4AW Bipod system.

Mark and Sam used a custom Remington 700 mated to an MDT ACC Premier Chassis System for their 7mm-08 build.

Once again, Mark and Sam of the ‘Mark and Sam AfterWork’ YouTube channel have pushed a popular rifle caliber to its absolute limits with a combination of shooting expertise and precision equipment. This isn’t the first time and surely won’t be the last time we see the Australian shooting duo combining some of the best precision shooting ammunition, actions, barrels, and MDT chassis systems to hit targets at distances over 1 Mile.
