Southern Extreme TV: MDT XRS Chassis Review - MDT Mention

Southern Extreme brings down-home Southern love to hunting and shooting. In a recent video, Southern Extreme discusses the pros of updating the chassis on an off-the-shelf rifle and why it is a great solution for those who dream of custom rifles but don’t love the associated cost of building one. Of course, the chassis he chose is the MDT XRS (a personal favorite of mine).

In his words, adding a chassis to your rifle is the best way to bridge the gap between run-of-the-mill and top-end custom rifles. A perfect example of this is the Bergara B-14 HMR in 308 Winchester. It is a solid rifle out of the box but elevated when mated to a premium chassis. The Bergara is a heavy and accurate rifle based on the proven Remington 700 design. Its reputation as an accurate rifle holds but leaves a little to be desired when it comes to modularity. That’s where the MDT XRS comes in. After buying the B-14 and the MDT XRS, Southern Extreme believes the end-user has a very capable rifle that falls well under a $2000 price point. The result is a rifle that looks like it belongs on the PRS firing line.

As the video progresses, Southern Extreme examines the features of the XRS. This includes an adjustable comb, detachable box magazine, and M-Lok slots along the forend (perfect for adding Arca rails and predator lights). It even has sling swivels, which many manufacturers choose to ignore, something that he was sure to highlight. For him, the modularity of the chassis is key. For example, the chassis has swappable grips to fit your hand size and shooting style.

The MDT XRS Chassis is a highly versatile platform.

He further adds to the potential modularity of the rifle by comparing it to an AR. Like an AR-15 with interchangeable upper receivers, the MDT XRS can be adapted to a variety of Remington 700 barreled actions to give the shooter the ultimate flexibility. Do you want a short-barreled timber gun? Or maybe a long-barreled varmint gun? Fine, swap the chassis to the appropriate barreled action and torque it down to spec. Good to go.

Southern Extreme brings southern vibes to the “gun-tube” space with honest and practical reviews and insight. Be sure to check him out!
