Texas Plinking - Oryx Chassis Howa 1500 Budget Build - MDT Mention
The Texas Plinking YouTube channel recently shared a video showcasing a "budget rifle build," chambered in .308 Winchester. Brandon, the host, summarizes the build components and then demonstrates its capabilities at various distances. For the build, Brandon used a short action Howa 1500 barreled action purchased from Brownells and mated it to an MDT Oryx Chassis System. Brandon chose the robust Arken Optics EP5 5-25x56 riflescope. Like the MDT Oryx, it is affordable, quality, and provides a lot of value. The build was rounded out with a suppressor from OSS.
Though the host prefers 6.5 Creedmoor, he had no problems shooting a sub-moa group at 100 yards with the 308 Winchester/175-grain SMK and pushing the rifle out to 950 yards in some aggressive wind. The M-LOK slots forend allowed for an Atlas bipod, and the adjustable comb allowed for perfect comb height.
Head shots at 550 yards.
Overall, the budget precision rifle build showcased in the Texas Plinking video performed exceptionally well. Brandon was satisfied with the rifle's performance and noted though the individual parts were affordable, when combined, the system as a whole felt like a premium rifle that he did not have to fight with. The rifle simply performed. Are you looking to get into precision rifle? It's hard to beat a Howa 1500 mated to an MDT chassis system!
The MDT ORYX Chassis System can be configured for any application.
