Impact Shooting - Carbon Rings - MDT Mention
Several weeks ago, we published an article written by Matt Hornback about his experiences with the Carbon Ring. Further research led us to a great video from IMPACT Shooting, where the host, Pieter, discusses what carbon rings are, why they form, and their effects. He talks about his experience with carbon rings and what he does to manage them.
Pieter's recent woes with carbon rings started with his 6mm Dasher when he encountered severe pressure fluctuations and damaged shell casings. Upon speaking with a friend, the host was reminded of the hallmarks of carbon rings and checked his bore with a borescope to see what was causing the symptoms he experienced while at his last range session.
Pieter does a fantastic job discussing carbon rings.
The host shows a live video feed inside the bore of one of his precision rifles. The presence of a carbon ring and the materialization of a second carbon ring are seen within his rifle's barrel. After normal cleaning methods failed, Pieter removed the large black handle from a cleaning rod. The rod was inserted into a drill, and a nylon brush was attached to the end. The host drew a mark on the cleaning rod to position the brush over the carbon ring. After inserting the rod into the barrel and letting the carbon solvent-soaked brush spin for a few minutes, the carbon ring was removed.

Pieter mentions the importance of caution when utilizing non-conventional methods to clean out precision rifle barrels. He also emphasized that trimming his brass casings too short might be the main culprit behind his carbon ring issues. Deep-cleaning a rifle chamber is also noted as one of the main preventative measures that may stop carbon rings from forming, especially in suppressor-equipped firearms where carbon tends to build quickly.
