Inside MDT - How To Optimize Your Rifle For Positional Shooting

Getting out of the prone position and learning to shoot off tripods, barricades, and natural formations like rocks is a vital skill for competitors, law enforcement and military members, and hunters. This method of shooting is called positional shooting, and though not as stable as prone, is where shooters will often find themselves.

A common question posed by new shooters is how do you set up your rifle, specifically the comb height, length-of-pull, and riflescope for positional shooting? In this video, MDT’s own Ryan McLean, and Andy Slade discuss optimizing your rifle for positional shooting. They discuss comb height, length-of-pull, balance, grip, chin welds, and cheek welds.

The beauty of our Chassis Rifle Systems, like the MDT ACC in the video, is the ability to customize the rifle for your particular morphology or body type. Andy brings up an interesting point in the video: a method for determining length-of-pull based on shooting bag placement in front of the magwell and a non-bladed body position, not the conventional 90-degree bicep-to-finger method. Andy demonstrates the proper eye relief, and the video shows the perfect sight picture devoid of scope shadow. Another great demonstration is using weights for balance and mentions taking ancillary gear like the MDT Ckye-Pod into account.

Mastering positional shooting is a must for competition, hunting, and tactical applications.
