THE JOURNEY TO SHOOT BETTER

There comes a moment in your life when everything feels right, and it’s like this is how it’s meant to be. I first felt that holding a Beretta 92 FS, pretending like I knew what I was doing. The range officer told me to bring my hand up a bit higher, and where to place my off hand, then I squeezed the trigger with all my might, the gun went off, and to no one's surprise, I pulled the shot high and left. From that moment on I found my passion in life, and it was shooting. My name is Anthony, and this is the story of my journey to shoot better.

Shortly after that day, I found myself unemployed, unsure of what to do next. A local gun shop was hiring for a retail sales position and after eating my very famous words to my wife of “I will never work retail” I found myself behind the counter selling firearms. It was a very different experience, and I was immediately hooked as I was excited to come to work every day and learn something new!

One day a Remington 700 5R Milspec came in and I instantly fell in love with the rifle. From there on I knew I had to have one, but I didn’t know why I had to have one other than the cool green HS precision stock. Real life set in and I couldn’t afford the rifle I wanted, however, I could afford a Remington 700 AAC-SD and after some thought, moving money around, and placing an order, I had a green stock Remington 700 in 308 Winchester.

The first time I shot the rifle I purchased a box of American Eagle 150 gr FMJ’s, excitedly I placed my targets at 100 yards, got behind the rifle, and squeezed the trigger five times. The best grouping of the day was 1.5”. I was disappointed. Later that week I discussed the issue I was having with a customer that built precision rifles. His suggestion was to try a different kind of ammunition, specifically Federal Premium 168 gr SMK Gold Medal Match. Taking his advice I purchased an entire case, and on my next outing, my groups were consistently 1 MOA. I realized how much of a difference quality ammunition makes, however, I wanted to shoot better.

After many hours researching precision rifles and what was improving accuracy for other people, I decided the factory Hogue stock wasn’t the best platform for what I was doing. I decided that the next upgrade to my rifle would be a new stock. After weeks of searching online for what I wanted, I found a game changer. I discovered a company by the name of Modular Driven Technologies, who produced a chassis called the TAC21, it looked like an AR platform, offered the ability to utilize AICS magazines, and no bedding was required! A few emails later my brand new TAC21 arrived.

In a single night I assembled my new chassis, and after launching my bolt stop spring a few times into low orbit, my TAC21 was installed. The very next day after zeroing the scope at 100 yards I shot a ¾” group, and I went “wow! I can’t believe that I did that.”. Next came the Timney trigger and my rifle was now shooting ½” groups at 100 yards consistently.

Fast forward six years I am now doing my own reloading, have shot at 1350 yards with my Remington 700 SPS Varmint in 308 Winchester in an ESS Chassis, and best of all I’m now a customer support representative at MDT. Working for MDT is a dream come true, I work with products that I genuinely believe will help people shoot better!
