DIY $6 Target Stands - Guns And Guitars - MDT Mention

The Guns and Guitars YouTube channel, owned by Dan Thompson, has some great content related to, you guessed it, guns and guitars! Besides guns and guitars, Dan also reviews knives, flashlights, optics, and a plethora of audio equipment. Dan's Channel features budget-minded gear reviews or guides that walk you through upgrading or building quality gear and equipment.

Several weeks ago, I was checking out some of Guns and Guitar's content and came across a really cool video where Dan demonstrated making a target stand out of 1/2 inch rebar.

In the video, Dan showed how to make two target stands by simply bending a 10-foot section of rebar with just a scrap piece of two-by-four. One style was a simple "U" design perfect for holding tall paper targets and metal spinners, and the other was ideal for hanging steel with metal shepherd's hooks.

Will rebar stand up to centerfire precision rifle rounds? The first formal precision rifle class I ever took was at Accuracy 1st in Clarendon, Texas, and I remember seeing scores of rebar target stands spread across the range. The rebar was holding up fine against both the elements and projectiles.

Steel targets make up the majority of targets at precision rifle matches.

BEST PRACTICES FOR SHOOTING STEEL

Steel targets are a lot of fun to shoot and provide immediate feedback during competition and training. Follow these general rules when shooting steel.

  • Always wear eye protection for carbine and pistol work, especially when shooting steel.
  • Use AR500 or AR550 steel
  • The minimum safe distance for a handgun is 15 yards, and for a rifle is 100 yards. Rimfire distances may vary and will be determined by the Range Officer.
  • Do not shoot targets that are pitted or damaged.
  • Try to angle your targets downwards to mitigate ricochet.
  • Consider frangible ammunition for pistol and carbine work up close. This does not apply to precision rifle application at distance.
