Modern Hunting Rifles With Scott Satterlee - MDT Mention
The "Long Range With The Lillys" YouTube channel is a well of knowledge for those interested in improving their shooting. I have learned a lot of what I know about long-range shooting from reading and researching the likes of Mike Lilly and Scott Satterlee. This article will summarize what Scott and Mike believe is the future of modern long-distance hunting technology. In the video on the Lillys YouTube channel titled "Modern Hunting Rifles With Scott Satterlee," the duo start by reviewing their idea of a "modern traditional" hunting rifle, then showcasing Scott's idea of a First-generation "Ultra Modern" rifle and finish the video by reviewing Scott's most recent evolution of the "Ultra Modern" hunting rifle.
The "Modern Traditional" hunting rifle example Scott shows Mike is a classic Remington 700-style action in a Manners EH1 traditional hunting rifle stock. Scott says the biggest jump in long-distance shooting technology today involves the use of ballistic calculation devices, better optics, and various laser devices. Scott emphasizes that even with a classic hunting rifle stock, we can use these tools to shoot much more consistently than our grandfathers did in the past century. The utilization of these tools allows us to use the "institutional knowledge" that is passed down generation by generation and combine it with modern technology to become better hunters. Scott says that we still hunt the same way we did in the past, but we now have much more capability in what we can do with a precision hunting rifle. "We're not guessing," Scott says regarding the use of more precise shooting gear.
ULTRA-MODERN HUNTING RIFLES
As Mike and Scott talk about Scott's "Ultra Modern" hunting rifle setup, Mike raises the question, "What is a modern hunting rifle?" Scott and Mike discuss that some people still think that because a rifle looks "modern," has a pistol grip, or has a stock made of a material other than wood, it can't be classified as a hunting rifle. This topic comes up regularly among those competing in or around the world of the NRL Hunting League, where hunting rifles are split into two classes by weight, regardless of what they look like. While explaining the importance of hunters accepting that hunting rifles are changing in looks, he introduces his next rifle. The rifle features an MDT HNT26 Chassis, MDT Ckye-Pod, and a NightForce Optic. Scott talks about how he can hunt "Anything from elk down" with the short action, suppressed rifle, noting this rifle can be calibre-swapped easily depending on the situation. The hosts discuss how precise this rifle setup is and talk about the pinpoint precision, which provides forgiveness when range estimation errors, bad shooter positioning, or atmospheric conditions are in play. To further expound on the difference between Satterlee's "First-generation Ultra Modern" rifle and a more traditional-style hunting rifle, the host shows how easily his "Ultra Modern" rifle collapses into a small package for transportation and mobility performance gains. This is easily done with the MDT chassis that features a folding stock and the MDT Ckye-Pod mounted to the chassis' ARCA rail section, which allows the user to slide the bipod towards the magwell to reduce the rifle's footprint.
Finally, the "Ultra Modern" rifle of the future that Satterlee shows Mike looks quite like the previous rifle. With a modern MDT chassis, largely carbon fiber construction, and modular parts, this last rifle utilizes all of the tricks and features of Scott's "First Gen" Ultra Modern rifle with the added bonus of quick and easy caliber changes. The hosts go on to explain that with the recent development in rifle action and chamber tolerances from the likes of companies such as Long Peak, Impact, and Defiance Actions, pre-made, pre-cut barrels can be made to be swapped from action to action easily. Gone are the days of sending off a rifle to the gunsmith to change the barrel if you have the time and money to take advantage of the most modern Bolt-action hunting rifle technology. When asked how quickly he can change calibers on his "Ultra Modern" rifle, Scott says he can jump from caliber to caliber in 15 minutes.
The hosts continue on the caliber options and importance of caliber-modularity in modern-day hunting and finish the video emphasizing that at the end of the day, correct decision-making while hunting is of utmost importance. Mike says that he appreciates the advancements in long-range shooting technology but explains that he does not lose sight of basic hunting skills like shot placement, shot choice, and moving in as close as possible for the most guaranteed kill shot. While hunters should take advantage of new hunting technology, they should be knowledgeable in that "institutional knowledge" that is passed down from previous generations and can be learned by anyone, regardless of their gear.
