Mountains, Mullets, Merica! Shorty 6.5 Creedmoor - MDT Mention
YouTube Channel “Mountains, Mullets, Merica!” posted a fresh new video titled, “Shorty 6.5 Creedmoor (16”)—Real-world performance,” in which the host tests out a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle with a 16-inch barrel at long distances.
The intro to the video breaks down different 6.5 Creedmoor ammunition and bullet types. It summarizes methods for testing a suppressed 16-inch 6.5 Creedmoor rifle. The rifle used in the video uses a Pristine Actions receiver with a Timney 2-stage trigger. An Outlier 16-barrel with a 1-in-8 twist is attached to the action. This is done via a Savage barrel nut—making for simple and easy barrel changes. The barrel has a thicker contour and is heavier than most, which helps with stiffness. A 30-caliber Otter Creek Labs Hydrogen L Titanium Suppressor sits at the end of the barrel. The suppressor is lighter than similarly sized steel suppressors, lowering the weight on the front of the rifle. The action sits in an MDT XRS Chassis system. The host mentions how he enjoys the XRS Chassis System because it gives him a “traditional feel” while providing attachment points for ARCA rail sections and weights to help with balance and recoil management.

Velocities averaged 2,640 FPS with Ally Munitions 135-grain bullets in two five-shot strings through a chronograph. Their extreme spread numbers averaged 25 FPS. A second ten-shot string was fired using Winchester 140 SMK bullets. It averaged 2,583 FPS with an extreme spread of 86 FPS, which was noted as less than desirable for long-distance shooting. The Ally Munitions loads averaged ¾ inch groups at 100 yards while the Winchester 140 SMKs hovered at 1 MOA.
After zeroing this rifle, the host moves to shoot at a 45% IPSC silhouette from 325 yards. After adjusting his hold for atmospheric conditions, the host shoots a five-round group of Winchester SMK bullets, all of which hit the IPSC target. Then, a new string of shots is taken at a 12-inch circle steel plate from 650 yards, and six out of nine shots land on target.

Next, shots are taken at a full-size IPSC steel silhouette from 1,025 yards. Both the Winchester SMK and Ally Munitions rounds were used. Four out of ten shots of Winchester ammunition hit the silhouette, and eight out of ten of Ally ammunition landed on target.

Wrapping up the shooting portion of the video, the host shoots his Ally Munitions ammunition at a full-size IPSC silhouette from 1250 yards. Five of seven shots fired from this distance hit, showing that with the right shooter and rifle setup, it is possible to make shots from over 1,000 yards with 6.5 Creedmoor and a 16-inch barrel.

The host provides some input on the performance of his shorty rifle and notes that he is happy with its performance. The rifle is touted as a “very handy, very quiet” rifle that can be easily transported and allows for easy mobility.
