22 ARC: 16 Vs 20 Inch Barrel Performance

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the 22 ARC is a home run in both an AR-15 and a custom bolt-action rifle. Hornady nailed this cartridge. But here's the question I kept coming back to after I had both platforms running: how much does four inches of barrel actually cost you, especially when you add a gas-operated action into the equation?

So I did what any obsessed precision rifle shooter would do. I ran both rifles side by side over six range sessions from February through April 2026, shot five-string groups through a chronograph with every bullet weight I had on hand, and let the data tell the story.

Spoiler: four inches matters. And it matters more than you'd expect — for a very specific reason.

The Two Rifles

Rifle one is a custom AR-15 built around a 16-inch Proof Research stainless cut-rifled barrel. This is a gas-operated, semi-automatic platform. It's fast, compact, suppresses great, and runs like a sewing machine. I love shooting this thing.

Rifle two is a full custom built on a Falkor Defense LW7 action wearing a 20-inch Proof Research carbon fiber wrapped cut-rifled barrel in an MDT JAE Gen5. Bolt action, no gas system. Every grain of powder goes toward one job: pushing the bullet.

Same barrel manufacturer. Same 22 ARC cartridge. Same ammunition on the same days, and every single load was built with Shooter's World Precision powder. One powder, every session, every bullet weight. The only variables are four inches of barrel and the platform they live in. And that platform difference is a bigger part of the story than most people realize.

Here's the thing about gas-operated semi-automatic rifles that doesn't get talked about enough: when the rifle fires, a portion of the propellant gas is bled off through the gas port to cycle the action, push the carrier back, eject the case, strip a new round, and chamber it. That gas is doing real work. Important work. But it's work that pulls energy away from the bullet. In a bolt action, there's no gas system to feed. Every bit of that pressure stays behind the bullet for the full length of the barrel. That difference shows up on the chronograph every single time.

Averaged across every bullet weight and every session, the 20-inch bolt action ran 115 fps faster than the 16-inch gas gun. Four more inches of barrel, plus a system that keeps every bit of gas working for the bullet.

The conventional rule of thumb is roughly 25 to 30 fps per inch of barrel. Four inches should cost you around 100 to 120 fps. Our average gap came in at 115 fps right in that window. But I got there a little different way.

The lighter loads showed the widest gaps. The 62-grain Hornady ELD-VT opened up to 140.9 fps, the biggest spread in the dataset. Fast-burning powder, lighter bullet, and the gas-bleed penalty on the AR-15 all stacked together. The 77-grain Sierra MatchKing and 77-grain Berger OTM were consistent at 120 and 124 fps, respectively. The 88-grain Hornady ELD-M landed at 123.7 fps.

The 85.5 grain Berger Hybrid showed the tightest gap at 86.8 fps. Heavier bullets and this powder were more forgiving of a shorter barrel and a gas system pulling pressure. This is exactly what the 22 ARC was engineered for. That efficiency with heavy bullets out of shorter barrels is a real design feature, and you can see it right there in the data.

The 70-grain Barnes TAC-TX came in at 96.4 fps. Monolithic copper runs at higher pressure than jacketed lead-core, and it behaved differently than the others across both barrels. Still plenty fast out of the 16-inch gas gun at 2,694 fps, more than enough for the TAC-TX to do its job on game.

What This Means for Hunters

If you're a hunter, I want you to look at the 16-inch AR numbers and feel good about them. The 62-grain ELD-VT is breaking 3,076 fps. The 70-grain Barnes TAC-TX is running at 2,694 fps. You are not leaving performance on the table for anything inside 350 yards: predators, varmints, deer-sized game, you name it.

What you're gaining with the gas gun is a platform that's compact and easy to run in the field. Shorter overall length, faster follow-up shots, and a suppressor-ready setup that makes calling coyotes at night a completely different and incredibly fun experience. For most hunters, that trade is worth every fps you leave on the chronograph.

Now, push that distance out past 400 yards and the math starts to shift. A 115 fps velocity advantage at the muzzle becomes real energy retention and trajectory divergence by the time you're ringing steel or calling a shot on a mule deer at 450 yards on a mountain hunt. That's where the 20-inch bolt gun earns its place in the gun safe.

What This Means for Precision Rifle Shooters

If you're shooting PRS or you just love working steel out past 800 yards, the 20-inch Proof Research carbon barrel on a bolt action is the answer the data points to, and it's not close.

You all know I love this cartridge in a precision rifle setup. The carbon fiber wrap keeps the barrel temperature consistent across a string of shots. Your standard deviations stay tight, your ballistic solution stays accurate, and you're launching the 77 grain SMK at 3,037 fps and the 88 grain ELD-M at 2,779 fps. Those are serious numbers. That's a flat trajectory and a forgiving wind call at distance.

In competitions where you're packing the rifle, shooting cold bore from field positions, and taking shots that count, the 20-inch carbon bolt gun is purpose-built for that mission. Light enough for the pack. Fast enough for the shot. Consistent enough to trust.

 

So Which One Do You Need?

Honestly? It depends on what you're trying to do, and I think that's what makes the 22 ARC such a special cartridge. It performs in both platforms. You just need to know what you're optimizing for.

The 16-inch Proof Research stainless in the AR-15 is the right call if you want a compact, versatile hunting and predator rifle that handles like a carbine and still reaches out with real authority. Understand that your gas system is trading some velocity to run the action; account for it in your ballistic solution, and this rifle will not let you down inside the distances most hunters will ever shoot.

The 20-inch Proof Research carbon on a Falkor Defense bolt action is the right call if you're chasing performance at distance. You're getting every fps this cartridge can produce, you've got a bolt action retaining full gas pressure behind every bullet, and you've got carbon fiber keeping it consistent. That's the setup when the distance is the point.

Both barrels are exceptional. Both are Proof Research cut-rifled steel, made by the same hands. The 22 ARC is a home run either way. You just get to decide which home run you need.
