Should you load your bipod? It's one of the most common techniques taught in precision rifle shooting—but after thousands of rounds, hundreds of students, and years of instruction, I've come to believe it's often the wrong approach when maximum precision is the goal. First off, I know what many of you are going to say: "But my instructor taught me to load the bipod." Mine did too. Before I explain why I no longer believe that's the best technique, let me explain where I'm coming from. Not only was I a Marine infantryman, but I later became a Combat Instructor. After serving multiple combat deployments, I was selected to teach the next generation of warfighters. I taught exactly what I had been taught to teach. As silly as that sounds, that's often how military doctrine works until better information comes along. One of those doctrines was loading the bipod.
For those unfamiliar with the term, loading the bipod means applying forward pressure into the bipod legs. Years ago, we were even taught to dig in with our toes, driving our bodies forward into the rifle to create as much tension as possible. Whether the bipod was sitting on loose dirt or braced against a 4x4 barricade, the idea was to preload the system and lock everything together. The theory sounded logical. More tension should create more stability, especially during rapid strings of fire. Over time, however, we learned that wasn't entirely true. In fact, we took the concept to an extreme. The old M249 Squad Automatic Weapon had relatively flimsy sheet-metal bipod legs, and we were taught to load into those bipods so aggressively that it wasn't uncommon to bend or even snap them. That's how committed we were to the doctrine.

The rifle is an incredibly accurate machine. The weakest part of the system is almost always the human behind it. When we remove the shooter from the equation entirely, the rifle becomes remarkably consistent. If you secured a precision rifle in a solid fixture and pulled the trigger with a string or mechanical release, it would produce incredible groups because the rifle is simply doing what it was designed to do. The moment we climb behind it, we begin adding inputs.
I've spent years testing this through thousands of rounds, hundreds of students, and countless precision rifle classes using both bolt-action and semi-automatic rifles. The more unnecessary input we add, the more accuracy we usually lose. In my five-day Precision Rifle course, every shooter begins with nothing more than a bipod and rear bag. The goal is simple: remove as much shooter input as possible so students can learn the rifle, the ammunition, and the external ballistics without masking mistakes through excessive muscle tension. Later, in Precision Rifle Two, we move to tripods, barricades, and improvised positions. This is where the conversation becomes a little more nuanced.
If you're resting the rifle on a barricade and it wants to teeter or slide, applying a small amount of forward pressure into a barricade stop or magazine well can absolutely improve stability. In that situation, the barricade effectively becomes one leg of the support system while your body provides the other. That is a very different application than loading a bipod on the ground.

Some shooters wrap their sling around the tripod and back into their shoulder to create downward tension on the rifle. There are certainly situations where this can help control movement and improve follow-up shots, but it also introduces additional input into the rifle and changes how the rifle naturally recoils. That's a tradeoff.
If the goal is ultimate precision, I want as little unnecessary input into the rifle as possible. If the goal is speed and rapid follow-up shots, some added tension may become beneficial. Those are two entirely different conversations. After years of testing this with myself and countless students, we've repeatedly arrived at the same conclusion. When shooting for maximum precision from a bipod, it's almost always better to let the rifle rest naturally. Apply consistent shoulder pressure, maintain proper fundamentals, and allow the rifle to recoil straight back. Don't drive the rifle forward. Don't dig in with your toes. Don't try to overpower the rifle. Let it do what it was designed to do.

One of the biggest lessons that reinforced this actually came from belt-fed machine guns. The M249 cycles so quickly that your brain can't make meaningful corrections between shots. Once the gun starts getting away from you, it's already too late. The M240, on the other hand, fires the 7.62 NATO cartridge at a slower cyclic rate. I've watched highly experienced contractors in Baghdad achieve almost sniper-like performance with the M240 during controlled bursts because they allowed the gun to recoil naturally instead of fighting it.
Ironically, one of the first corrections we'd make during remedial training was simply telling shooters to relax.
That same lesson carried directly into my precision rifle instruction.

Of course, don't take my word for it. Go to the range and test it yourself. Don't shoot one group. Shoot several groups using both techniques and compare the consistency—not just the single best group you happen to fire. Better yet, spend time with a qualified instructor who can demonstrate both methods side by side. Experience has always been the greatest teacher. For me, after ten years in the Marine Corps, four years as a private military contractor, and nearly a decade teaching precision rifle full time, the answer has become pretty clear: When precision is the goal, less shooter input almost always produces more accurate results.
