MDT Writers Win POMAC Award - MDT Mention

Today, we highlight two of our Blog writers, Al Voth and Lowell Strauss, who have been recognized by the Professional Outdoor Media Association of Canada! What is the Professional Outdoor Media Association of Canada, you ask?

The Professional Outdoor Media Association of Canada is a national not-for-profit organization composed of professional communicators in the outdoor field, including writers, artists, photographers, broadcasters, illustrators, lecturers, podcasters, producers, radio, television, and internet personalities.

Founded in 1957 by Waterloo newspaperman Herb Smith, the Organization, originally called the Outdoor Writers of Canada (OWC), initially focused on writing improvement but soon expanded to work with various stakeholders to promote responsible use of Canada's natural resources. In 1983, the OWC broadened its membership beyond Ontario, and by 2008, it relocated its headquarters to Cochrane, Alberta. In 2022, the Organization rebranded as the Professional Outdoor Media Association of Canada (POMAC) to reflect its diverse media formats, officially launching under the new name in May 2023.

According to the POMAC website, the Organization's Mission reads, "As a community of professional outdoor communicators that is well informed, interconnected, and enthusiastic about hunting, fishing, and other traditional outdoor activities, the Professional Outdoor Media Association of Canada's mission is to promote and recognize high standards of craftsmanship and professional conduct among our members." POMAC helps members achieve success by encouraging appreciation for the outdoors, maintaining high standards, and fostering cooperation for the responsible use of Canada's resources.

Every year, the Professional Outdoor Media Association of Canada recognizes content creators in the outdoor space with a series of awards. For 2024, Inside MDT writer Lowell Strauss won two awards. In the Feature Category, he took 1st Place for an article called Bounty in the Boreal, published in Hooked Magazine, and 3rd Place for Shooting and Eye Health, published on the MDT Blog!

For 2023, Inside MDT writer Al Voth won 1st Place in the Column category for an article called Coyote School: Death & Rebirth, published on the MDT Blog.
