Samong Outdoors: Mule Deer In The Uplands!

The Fall hunting season brings renewed energy. It’s the early morning light filtering through the canopy, and it’s the dew that softens each step’s sound. For many who venture into God’s Country, they find peace. These quiet moments they soak in help keep them going. For Samong, this is what he looks forward to the most.

In his latest video, Samong heads back to his old stomping grounds for the opening day of Mule Deer gun season.

EARLY MORNING

Samong’s favorite season is fall, and his annual mule deer hunt with family is a cherished tradition. The adventure begins early, at 4:55 AM, with a steep hike into familiar country under the cover of darkness, rain, and wind. These challenging conditions test both man and gear, but also set the stage for a rewarding experience.

Throughout the day, the hunt unfolds in unpredictable waves—does and spikes bucks in fog, swirling wind, and close encounters with wildlife, including a black bear. These moments underscore the physical and mental demands of public-land mule deer hunting, where staying mobile is key. Samong covers miles through timber, burns, and ridgelines, constantly glassing and still-hunting rather than waiting passively.

THE GEAR

For the hunt, like many others, Samong is using a custom rifle built for mountain hunting. Its core features a Defiance anTi X action chambered in 280 Ackley Improved, a cartridge that offers a flat trajectory, controllable recoil, and dependable terminal performance. The 20-inch Oregon Mountain Rifle barrel keeps the system compact without sacrificing velocity, making it ideal for wooded terrain and steep country.

The MDT HNT26 chassis offers a lightweight, rigid, ergonomic, and easy-to-carry platform. Its folding design is especially helpful during long hikes and pack-outs, particularly when paired with the SilencerCo Scythe Ti suppressor. The MDT MTN bipod features a minimalist, durable design built for backcountry use. On top, a Vortex Razor LHT 4.5–22x50 is mounted in Vortex Pro rings. Samong employs a low-profile bubble level. For ammunition, Samong has chosen the reliable and proven Federal 140-grain Trophy Copper.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Ultimately, the hunt is about more than the deer. It’s about family, shared effort, and filling the freezer. The buck is merely the highlight. The real achievement is the preparation, persistence, and gear that support the hunter through every challenge. For Samong and others like him, success in the mountains comes from hard work, grit, and appreciation of the outdoors. For videos like this, check out Samong Outdoors on YouTube.
