The shooting world loves trends. Every year seems to bring a new cartridge that promises flatter trajectories, less recoil, or greater long-range performance. For a while now, the internet has been quick to declare the .308 Winchester obsolete, comparing every new cartridge against it and using ballistic charts to show why something newer is supposedly better. To be fair, cartridges like the 6.5 Creedmoor and 6mm Creedmoor do outperform the .308 in several important areas. They shoot flatter, drift less in the wind, and generallyMDT produce less recoil. If pure long-range performance is the only metric, they have legitimate advantages. But that doesn't mean the .308 has lost its place. As a combat veteran, precision rifle instructor, and someone who spends most of the week teaching shooters behind rifles, I still recommend the .308 in many situations. While newer cartridges often excel in specialized roles, the .308 remains one of the most practical, durable, and versatile rifle cartridges ever developed.
Here are five reasons why it's still an outstanding choice today.
One of the .308 Winchester's greatest strengths is how efficiently it performs from shorter barrels. Many modern rifle cartridges begin giving up significant velocity as barrel length decreases, but the .308 remains remarkably effective even when paired with compact rifles. Whether it's a 12.5-inch, 14.5-inch, or 16-inch barrel, the cartridge continues to deliver excellent performance while retaining substantial energy downrange. This efficiency is one of the reasons short-barreled .308 gas guns remain so popular among military, law enforcement, and civilian shooters alike. They provide a compact, maneuverable package without sacrificing the terminal performance many shooters need. For anyone building a rifle intended for practical field use, vehicles, or suppressed shooting, the .308 remains difficult to beat.
Performance always comes with tradeoffs, and one of the biggest is barrel life. Many of today's high-performance cartridges achieve their impressive velocities by operating at higher pressures and burning more powder. The result is increased throat erosion and barrels that often require replacement after relatively low round counts. The .308, by comparison, is comparatively gentle on barrels. That translates into longer barrel life, lower maintenance costs, and thousands of additional rounds before accuracy begins to decline. For instructors, competitive shooters, or anyone who spends significant time practicing, that durability becomes a major advantage. While cartridges like the 6mm Creedmoor and 22 Creedmoor offer exceptional ballistic performance, they generally do so at the expense of barrel longevity. The .308 strikes a balance that many shooters continue to appreciate.

Whether you're looking for inexpensive practice ammunition, premium match loads, hunting ammunition, or military surplus, there are countless options available. That widespread availability becomes especially valuable when traveling, hunting in remote areas, training regularly, or building an ammunition reserve. History has also shown that during ammunition shortages, common calibers like the .308 often recover more quickly than newer or more specialized cartridges. When supply becomes unpredictable, availability matters just as much as performance.
Much of today's cartridge discussion revolves around ballistic coefficients, wind drift, and long-range trajectory. Those are certainly important factors, but energy still matters. Whether you're hunting larger game, shooting through intermediate barriers, or running a short-barreled rifle, the .308 continues to deliver impressive terminal performance. Modern ammunition has only expanded its versatility. Lighter .308 loads, particularly 110-grain varmint-style ammunition, can produce surprisingly high velocities from shorter barrels. In some cases, these loads exhibit initial flight characteristics that resemble smaller, high-speed cartridges while still benefiting from the proven .308 platform. The result is a cartridge capable of adapting to a wide variety of applications without sacrificing the power that made it famous.
Perhaps the greatest strength of the .308 Winchester is simply how mature the platform has become. There's a reason it served as the standard for so many years. The aftermarket support is enormous. Rifles, magazines, replacement parts, match ammunition, ballistic data, and instructional resources are available almost everywhere. Very few cartridges offer the same level of ecosystem support, making the .308 one of the easiest rifle systems to build, maintain, and learn.

Is the .308 Winchester the flattest-shooting cartridge available today? No. Does it produce more recoil than many modern precision cartridges? Absolutely. But neither of those facts makes it obsolete. The .308 continues to excel where many shooters spend most of their time: practical field use. It performs exceptionally well from short barrels, offers excellent barrel life, produces substantial energy, enjoys unmatched ammunition availability, and is supported by one of the largest rifle ecosystems ever developed. Newer cartridges may outperform it in specific categories, but few can match the balance of durability, versatility, and practicality that the .308 Winchester provides. More than seventy years after its introduction, it remains one of the best all-around rifle cartridges ever created—and that's exactly why it refuses to die.
