Shooting techniques vary based on terrain, mission profile, equipment, individual capability, and environmental conditions. Among the many approaches to rifle employment, baseline shooting and adaptive shooting form the foundation of practical marksmanship. While they share core principles, each serves a distinct operational purpose for target interdiction.

Baseline shooting emphasizes structured, repeatable techniques that work for and sustain the individual. Adaptive shooting applies fundamentals in fluid, time-compressed, and imperfect environments. Understanding the distinction and the relationship between the two is critical for consistent performance in both controlled and dynamic engagements. Thus, making the well-rounded shooter more competent, confident, and capable in all environments.

To conceptualize shooting positions, extend your hand in front of you with your palm facing you, and now spread your fingers as wide as possible. Your hand becomes a visual and tactile reference for shooting stability, mobility, and adaptability.

Each finger represents one of the five baseline shooting positions based on bone structure, body mechanics, and situational environment:

1. Thumb - Standing
This is the most mobile and fastest position to enter and exit. It offers the least stability but maximum flexibility for movement, scanning, and transitioning.

2. Index Finger - High Kneeling
High kneeling lowers the shooter's profile while maintaining mobility. It often provides greater stability than standing and is useful behind low cover or when rapid transitions are required.

3. Middle Finger - Low Kneeling
Low kneeling further reduces the shooter's silhouette and increases stability. It is more deliberate than high kneeling and often used when cover is limited but time and opportunity allow for a steadier platform.

4. Ring Finger - Sitting
Sitting often provides a significant increase in stability with a much lower center of gravity. It sacrifices mobility for precision and is effective when time and terrain allow the shooter to settle in.

5. Pinky - Prone
Prone is the lowest and often most stable baseline position. It offers maximum accuracy and recoil control but minimal mobility and slower transitions.

Now manipulate your fingers closer together and farther apart. The space between your fingers represents adaptive shooting positions because it can be influenced or altered by external forces. You will see the baseline positions remain, whereas the adaptive positions change with the environment and the totality of the circumstances present. These are not fixed positions but situational solutions that fall between baseline positions. Examples include:

  • Leaning, crouched, or braced standing positions.
  • One-knee or asymmetrical kneeling variations
  • Supported sitting or squat positions.
  • Modified prone.

These adaptations are influenced by:

  • Terrain and environment
  • Available cover or support
  • Shooter mobility and equipment
  • Time constraints and threat dynamics

What Is Baseline Shooting?

Baseline shooting represents the fundamental framework of marksmanship. It focuses on deliberate mechanics that allow the shooter, weapon system, and ammunition to operate at peak performance. This is done using supplemental support items such as tripods, slings, and support bags.

Baseline shooting prioritizes:

  • Making supplemental support "work for you."
  • Sight alignment and consistent shot process.
  • Recoil management and follow-through.

Baseline techniques are employed when the shooter can dictate position and tempo, rather than reacting to the environment due to positional limitations, cover, or equipment constraints. While baseline shooting may lack some flair, it's essential for learning what "right" feels like. It forms the mechanical and neurological reference points required for effective performance under stress.

Baseline shooting is essential for new shooters and experienced personnel who wish to refine fundamentals. It teaches the efficient use of equipment and builds biomechanical consistency, which is critical for precision engagements and sustainable decision-making.

Use of supports, such as tripods, allows consistent height, angle, and pressure management across positions and is the only piece of equipment that can be used to build a solid shooting position anywhere. Baseline positions provide a universal reference for proper mechanics and consistent rifle-to-body interaction throughout all positions. They enhance proprioception, improve weapon handling efficiency, and reduce cognitive load during execution. Mastery of baseline positions enables smooth transitions, consistent recoil management, and repeatable results.

Most long-range shooters and professional snipers are familiar with the saying "fight for prone," reflecting the fact that the prone position is often the steadiest and most precise for optimal performance. However, with proper and consistent application of fundamental baseline shooting principles, all baseline positions can become nearly as stable as prone, allowing the mindset to evolve into "fight for baseline."

Baseline positional shooting builds the physical and cognitive framework required for all advanced performance. These skills apply equally to competition, hunting, law enforcement, and military operations. Once baseline proficiency is achieved, shooters must learn to operate outside ideal conditions; this progression defines adaptive shooting.

What Is Adaptive Shooting?

Adaptive shooting is the application of marksmanship in dynamic, degraded, or time-critical environments. Unlike baseline shooting, where the environment and equipment support the shooter, adaptive shooting requires the shooter to support the environment.

Accuracy remains dependent on stability, support, and center of gravity. Shooters create support using terrain, barricades, vehicles, or structures while managing recoil and balance. Retaining center of gravity and establishing an NPA will reduce the need to "fight the position" or time your shot.

Efficiency of Movement

Rapid, efficient movement between positions minimizes exposure and engagement time. Everyone knows the adage of "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast." Well, slow is slow, but efficient movement is fast. I hope you train accordingly.

Use of Cover and Concealment

Adaptive shooting integrates tactical or situational awareness. Shooters balance risk vs. reward while maintaining sight picture and weapon control.

Weapon Manipulation Under Constraint

Unconventional positions affect recoil, sight alignment, and visual processing. Shooters train to maintain acceptable accuracy despite mechanical or visual disadvantages.

Physical and Cognitive Conditioning

Adaptive performance requires:

  • Cardiovascular capacity.
  • Flexibility and mobility.
  • Stress tolerance.
  • Rapid decision-making.
  • Cognitive agility.
